TLL Highlights Apology

Addressing Our Last Email Blast

Hey creative community,

We’re sending out this email to apologize for the language that was used in the preview of our headline that does not match the values or our mission of inclusivity for the trans and nonbinary community. In an attempt to write copy focused on a film directed by a cis filmmaker, the term “womanhood” was used as well as “womxn”. This is exclusionary language that does not reflect how we view feminism or the community of women and nonbinary creators we are and also aim to support. We apologize to the nonbinary and gender non-conforming creatives in our community for this.

This is inexcusable but we believe in sharing transparency in holding ourselves accountable. This mistake was due to an error with missing it in an editorial review and does not indicate any exclusionary views of our team. The copy was written by an individual learning inclusive language and growing also from this situation, but as the founder and last set of eyes on any content, I should have caught both of these and for that, I’m very sorry.

The Light Leaks is a safe space for trans women, nonbinary creators, and gender-nonconforming artists. We also want to keep showing up for these communities. If there’s anything that can do to better serve these communities - or if there is feedback as a whole that you’d like to share with our volunteer team please let us know.

Thank you so much for being part of the Light Leaks community, we appreciate you and will keep working hard to be a source of support, empowerment, and education for female and nonbinary filmmakers.

Best,Kim Hoyos, TLL Founder and TLL Team
